To Be Honest, Photography is something that you have to get out there and learn by trial and error. The more photos you take, the better you get at it. Anything that you are not sure about, Google is your best pal. Another advise would also be to join a local photography club which will organise outings as a group to go out and take photos and learn from each other. It is also an expensive program/hobby but so rewarding when its done right. Keep taking photos and I look forward to you being the next Annie Leibovitz or Joe McNally !

This is a great question, and I appreciate that you're thinking about the affordability factor. I'm not sure where you are located, but I can provide you with my experience and perhaps it will help you.

I had always had an interest in photography as a young adult and tinkered around with it. When I went to college, I attended a state university in Florida, studying English. When I realized I was able to minor in photography, that's what I did! Being able to go into a photo lab and develop my own film (yes, FILM) helped me tremendously to slow down in my process and really THINK about what it was that I was trying to capture. As much as it stinks to have to pay for a camera that uses film, and also buy the film, I would highly recommend finding a place that you can practice this. You will learn so much about yourself, your style, and how to better capture what you want to in an artistic manner.

My experience has been that regardless of where you go, you should check out the program before you enroll in the school to see if it feels like it lends well to your needs as an artist. People who are passionate about their craft will find each other, and you'll notice whether it seems like it is there or not when you visit. In the meantime, build your network by joining local photography clubs (you should be able to find them through meet up groups, check your local library's message boards, etc.) and I would highly recommend finding a camera shop and asking them about programs in your area.

Good luck on your quest!

Courtney recommends the following next steps:

Check out the universities near you to see what the arts colleges entail.
Check out camera stores and network with the staff.
Look for message boards to build your artistic network.
