Hi Jose! Well, it depends on what you want to do in the pharmaceutical field. If you want to work in the pharmaceutical field as a scientist, then at the very least a bachelor's degree is going to be required. But the majority of scientists in the pharmaceutical industry have at least a master's or doctorate degree in chemistry or chemical engineering. Many people also specialize in pharmaceutical chemistry. Scientists can have a pharmaceutical career in a wide variety of positions including research & development, quality assurance, and production just to name a few. If you want to become a pharmaceutical representative for a company, there is a bit more variety in the background you can have as there is no set standard for degree or certification requirements in this field. Some pharmaceutical reps have a degree in marketing, business, or even biological sciences. To be a pharmaceutical sales representative, you certainly need skills in communication and medical terminology as well! If you want to become a pharmacist, that requires completing a number of prerequisite classes as an undergraduate student (the specific classes you take will vary depending on which pharmacy school you apply to but the core classes are the same: Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Physics, etc.) before applying to a Doctor of Pharmacy program. Pharmacy schools are 3 to 4 year programs that involve intensive course work and clinical experience through rotations in varying healthcare settings. I have worked as a pharmacy technician in retail and hospital settings, in addition to working as a laboratory assistant in a University research lab. I am currently an Intern Pharmacist and Doctor of Pharmacy student with a bachelor's in Biochemistry. There are many opportunities in the pharmaceutical industry for people of all educational backgrounds.
