Ryan,
It is not uncommon to see people with criminal backgrounds in the skilled trades - carpentry, plumbing, construction, welding, as well as lawn maintenance, home healthcare, custodial, etc fields. Each one will be determined on a case by case basis. I am NOT asking you to divulge anything. Understand that "juvenile " records are usually sealed. In Texas, 17 and up is considered adult when it comes to criminal charges. Also, certain offenses committed as a juvenile are certified up to be tried as an adult.
Assuming you do not have a "juvenile" record. . . The two charges hardest to get around are drugs and theft. It is important to be honest, and to accept full responsibility for your actions. No one wants to hear "I got a bum rap." Be able to explain the steps you have taken and are taking to turn your life around. And above all else, be a top-notch welder! (who also recognizes the importance of safety in the workplace). A lot of welding employers will administer a skills test, and ask you to do certain things. Be good at what you do, and they are more willing to overlook a bit of a background issue.
