Hi Tyla,
First and foremost, a fashion stylist should take a variety of fashion courses. While some simply take a few classes before working, many employers and clients prefers stylists with a formal education. Fashion stylist degrees come in the form of associate and bachelor's degrees, and students can also find fashion degree programs. Classes include fashion designing, fashion merchandising and visual or art merchandising. Many private organizations and individual stylists also offer classes that cover the basics.
Certifications also give stylists legitimacy in the field and make you more employable. Typical topics in a certification course include fashion basics, fashion styling, color basics, body figure analysis, makeup, hairstyles and accessories. Other certification classes include fashion history, personal versus celebrity styling, and working with different body types.
Along with a formal education, fashion stylists should consider gaining hands-on work experience. Many fashion schools assist students in setting up an internship with a current fashion stylist or fashion design company to gain real-life experience. Some fashion stylists also offer apprenticeships for aspiring stylists to work alongside them and help with everyday job duties. Working an entry-level job in retail is another way to gain work experience that will help you get full-time employment in the field of fashion.
