Jasma’s Answer

Hi Maria,

Hope this message finds you well. Working in mortgage finance as an asset management specialist has been a very rewarding experience both financially and emotionally. My job consist of helping people either try to stay in a home they can no long afford due to certain circumstances or make a graceful exit if that is not an option. Being able to help these people in a small way is a great feeling. This job also allows me to support my family including my son who is about to go to college. There are also plenty of opportunities to move up within this organization/business. Another bonus is that you do not have to have an actual college degree to be in this industry. It’s feally about experience and gaining knowledge.

I hope this answer helps you. Good luck in your future endeavors!!!!

Ronald’s Answer

Maria,

As a federal employee, looking from the outside, the work seems boring and bureaucratic. However I can tell you that from first hand experience a career with the federal government can be richly rewarding and meaningful and far from dull. I negotiate contracts for the Library of Congress. I don't buy books, we have curators for that, but I buy things to make the books and other items in our collections available to people who come to the Library. Over the past few months we negotiated a contract to display items from the Women's Suffrage collection. The movement began in 1848 in New York. At the Library we have hand written journals from Sojourner Truth, Susan Day, and other famous suffragists, and footage of marches in support of women's rights over the years. Our exhibit, which opened this week, shows footage of marches and speeches over the years. As a contracting officer, I negotiate the contracts to build the cases and buy the video equipment to display the materials. A week before the exhibit opened we had a minor crisis - a picture that we selected to display along a wall of the Library of Congress of the Women's march of 2018 showed a great image of thousands of women in pink caps in a modern day demonstration for women's rights. When we blew the image up to 8 feet by 12 feet for display and started to install it within the exhibit, we noticed that the small placards they were holding (which we couldn't read in the photograph) actually had obscenities cursing the current administration. Politics aside, putting a three foot tall "F" word on display in the Jefferson Building where so many school children come to visit was not an option. So we had to negotiate at the eleventh hour with the contractor to tear down the display and replace it with a more appropriate one. The exhibit schedule was set, so a delay in the opening was not an option, so we engaged the contractor to work around the clock to open an amazing display on time. Some may talk about the good health benefits or job security, but I will tell you that the most rewarding thing about a federal career is the ability to be a part of something bigger than yourself and make a difference each and every day.

James’s Answer

Being an employee of a financial institution gives you the flexibility of working Monday through Friday with weekends off and most major holidays. Financial institutions provide competitive wages as well as great insurance and health benefits. I highly recommend this career path if you have or want a family.
