I have a sociology degree but I apply it in a business setting - in consulting. Sociology is all about understanding the broader forces that influence large groups' behavior. You could use this knowledge to help leaders in an organization lead big changes, or you could use it to help politicians think about the most effective interventions to lead changes in their community. So if you study sociology you are not limited to being an academic!

J’s Answer

Sociologists are researchers, so their days are focused on conducting research, which may include gathering data, analyzing data, writing up results, reading academic articles, and exchanging ideas with colleagues. Sociologists gather data in different ways - some go into the field and conduct interviews and surveys, others use existing datasets. Analyzing data could include going through interview notes to identify patterns, or use statistical methods and software to make sense of large amounts of information. Sociologists like other social scientists will spend a great deal of time reading and writing. Finally, there are opportunities to exchange ideas with colleges, through workshops, seminars, as well as conferences.
