I want to pursue two careers but I'm not sure if that's possible. I want to become a doctor and own and work in my own beauty salon, any suggestions or advice?

Carole’s Answer

Hi Fatima; You have chosen two very diverse occupations, but very interesting ones. I do have some advice for you which I will suggest to you: 1. First thing to do is go to a career center at your school and take a assessment survey to see what career is most interesting to you. In answering the questions given to you, you will get an idea of some of the careers that you might like to try. 2. If you have already done that, and it suggested business for the beauty salon, and medicine then I would follow some of the points I will suggest now; 3. Since Medical school is many years of schooling, I would check out getting a Beautician License, which is a much shorter time to acquire it. After you get that then work in a salon and see how business is done there. You should get some clues from working there to help you figure out if you would like to run your own business. If you pursue the medical field, Research is the best way to figure out if that is what you want to do. 4. These are some of the ideas I have for Medical school: Research what you need to do for a degree; Interview people that you might know that are working in the medical and see what they have to say; Volunteer at a hospital, or clinic to get information about what these doctors do all day long when they see patients; check out what areas of medicine you might want to get into so that you have an idea of what is out there for you. Just remember that the Business World is quite different from the Medical World, which ever one you choose make sure you keep that in mind and choose the right one for you. Co as much research as you can on each career for your sake. I wish you the best in your chosen field of work.

Carole recommends the following next steps:

Take a career assessment and check out other careers that fall into your choices; check out the Beautician License; Volunteer or get a job in a medical hospital or clinic so you are familiar with what goes on each day; if going into business take some business classes to help you run your business, such as accounting, business law, computer programming, and management. Before you open your own salon take these classes that I just suggested and it will make you a better manager and business owner.

Anything is possible! I would recommend maybe finding an area where you can combine both, perhaps plastic surgery? Maybe with a specialty/emphasis on facial procedures? It is typically recommended to focus your energy and efforts on one goal that you can become very successful with, as opposed to trying to split your efforts into multiple areas. Dream big!

Thank you comment icon Thank you so much Megan for your feedback it really opened my eyes. I will definitely take your suggestions into consideration. fatima

Very interesting combination. A good idea might be to consider talking to student counseler and get an assessment if your school courses are aligned with your career aspirations for e.g. to become a doctor could require more focus on science related courses in your high school and also some extra curricular activities that align with it. Try pursing a medical career perhaps something related to Dermetology which is a branch of medicine dealing with the skin, nails, hair and its diseases. It is a specialty with both medical and surgical aspects and try to pursue courses related to commericial beautician, getting into this business with medical background could make you really successful!

All the best!

Thank you comment icon Thank you Mr. Vallabhaneni! I really appreciate what you have to say. The information and suggestions you gave me were really mind opening. It really gave me a better and different way to look at it and maybe dermatology would not be so bad. Once again thank you very much. fatima
