Bradley’s Answer

Helping people that don't take care of their self. Patient's that have COPD that smoke are the biggest challenge for me. I worked the ED for several years. When we had a EMS bring a patient that could not breath into the ED it would mean a lot of hard work trying to get their oxygen level back to a normal range. If that was not possible we would have to intubate the patient and send them to ICU. Then guess what, yep, one to two weeks later they would be back to the ED for the same thing just because they are still smoking. Basically we are just helping them to smoke more. I love helping people but sometimes you have to draw the line. That was the most challenging thing for me as a ED nurse.

Ali’s Answer

Although I do not work in this field, I was originally planning on becoming a doctor so I learned a lot about the healthcare industry.

For starters, the amount of education required for many medical careers is above the traditional 4 year degree. That is challenging for many because you have more school, potentially more debt, and you lose out on money you could have earned if you would have earned another degree and started work earlier.

Once you become licensed, it can be difficult to balance work and life. Healthcare jobs are very demanding in that the hours can be long and you are constantly working. Depending on the type of employment situation, you may be on call and have to respond to patients at a moments notice. Also, dealing with sick patients can be emotionally taxing.
