Clay’s Answer

I went to nursing school and also worked as a medical device rep for 17 years. The process to becoming a nurse practitioner is very competitive so be ready to put your heart and soul into this process. You will first need to complete a 4 year nursing degree. The goal here is to just get into a program somewhere. Smaller states and more rural areas away from the major metro areas will provide best chance to get into school. I went to a small nursing school in Mississippi. Once you are done with nursing school you will then apply to Nurse Practitioner program. Chances are you school you are at for nursing school will have a NP program for team with another school that offers the program. You will need to have good grades out of nursing school and it is very time consuming. If you become a nurse practitioner you can also at that point be an owner of an urgent care facility. You will need to team with a Dr but this is a great way of earning very good money. Not just a nurse practitioner but also a business owner.

Thank you comment icon Thank you, for the information you have provided me with it was very helpful. I will be following your advice and looking for schools in smaller places to have more options. Do you think having two C´s on my transcript will lessen my chances of getting into a nursing program? How could I start my own urgent care facility? I appreciate the help! Kimberly
Thank you comment icon One of the items that play into maybe having a lower grade is what you are doing with you time. What I mean is there are many schools that will take a student that has a C in something but was active in the community or working part time. Anyone can stay at home and be a book worm and no social life and have better grades. I would not stress about that too much. Play up you other activities if you can. As far as the urgent care. You need to work as a Nurse Pract for a few years and then team with a doctor who just needs to be available for consult. Many times the Dr may work at the hospital or in private practice and be an owner in urgent care and you are the care giver at the urgent care. Clay Downing

Richard’s Answer

After high school it takes about 4 years of university to become a registered nurse.
After time spent working as a nurse, one can apply to school to obtain a masters and become a nurse practitioner, which takes an additional 2 years.
