Hi Christina!

The pros, obviously, you get to work with animals!!! You get to instruct others (pet owners) on how to give the best care for their animals. And hopefully, as you grow in the profession, you will help to encourage others to enter the field. Veterinarians are also highly respected in the community. They aren't exactly the pastor, but, everyone loves the Vet! The pay isn't bad either.

I can give you an awful lot of cons. I don't want these to discourage you. Just, be aware. First, you will see animals that have been abused. You will also face situations where people choose to put down their animal simply because they can't afford to pay for your services. You can only discount so much - you are running a business. (so for this reason, PLEASE encourage everyone to get pet insurance!!! I just spent over a $1000 for a little skin irritation that refused to heal!) And, dealing with people. Not everyone who likes animals is a people-person. You will need to be able to show compassion when making end of life decisions. You will need to stay in good physical condition, able to kneel, squat, bend, etc. It could possibly be difficult to get time off, depending on the size of the practice you are in. Oh, and school won't be easy!

hope this helps!

Kim

Christina, a career as a veterinarian would require a strong love of animals and a love of science. Pros would include spending your days helping animals feel better. Cons would include working with patients that cannot tell you where it hurts. Hours you work are generally good, but there would be some after hours emergencies. Many veterinarians provide boarding which requires 7-day work weeks unless you have staff to help with that portion.

I hope this helps and good luck!
