Josephine’s Answer

The credits you have already earned would not be lost as long as you attend the same college when you return. If you decide to transfer to a different school, some or possibly all of your credits may not be transferable. If you do decide to take some time off, it would be advisable to take an internship or at least volunteer in your chosen field. Remaining active in your field is important in terms of being re-admitted. In any case, as Dionne Griffith stated you should definitely speak to your college counselor/academic adviser about your plans.

Dionne’s Answer

I will assume that you are enrolled. if that is the case ...
- First, be sure to complete all classes with passing grades.
- Second, speak with your college counselor to advise him/her of your plan to learn to impact of doing so.
- Third, if you are receiving any financial aid or plan to receive financial aid, contact the financial aid office to learn if or how your financial aid will be impacted.
- Fourth, learn of any upcoming changes to your degree program.

No, I was out of college for 4.5 years and I kept my college credits. You will be fine and congratulations on going back to school.

Hi Joshua,

Keeping or transferring credits is all dependent on the college you are attending. You also have to keep in mind that requirements for majors also change now and again so if you wait too long to go back then you may have to take some extra courses to get caught up. At this point in time there are a lot of free online courses so you can keep up and maybe even get done more quickly.
