I'm friends with a couple of people who own their own facilities so I can help you with this.

I'm assuming that you want to train and to administrate the sports facility.

If you just want to get started, start small. The people I was thinking of literally started in their garage, giving private training that delivered results. Once they had clients, they were able to grow out of their garage to a business space that could house weights, plates and other equipment. Once they were able to do that, finding other people to share your venture seems to be the way to go. When your members increase, you'll be able to continue growing.

If you wanted to go directly into facility management and not start small, I would look around and go directly to the centers you want to work at. Volunteer or get a part time job at the facility to get a sense of what's going on. I would imagine that working at a facility is similar to a job anywhere else - you'll need the experience to be able to progress to managing the whole facility, so get experience where you can!

You asked "what does it take" and just like any other directorial position, you'll need business acumen, understanding of finance with your profit and loss statements as well as other managerial skills.

Best of luck to you and I hope to see your training facility soon!
