1st thing and the most important thing, you need to compose the picture with your bare eyes. Do not think about the techniques, just the subject and frame of the picture. click some pics with 'auto' mode. once you think you are good with framing a subject, then you have to do little research on how to play with light. there are multiple youtube videos. you will figure out !!

Dennis’s Answer

There are several skills required, but none is as important as mastering light. Assuming you will be working in a studio and not using available light outside, you would need to learn the qualities of light which are direction, intensity, and quantity and how to use lighting equipment to obtain these qualities. To learn composition, posing, et al, I recommend going to art museums to study the portraits by master painters and portrait photographers.

Dennis recommends the following next steps:

Study portraits made by accomplished artists. Learn lighting techniques. Experiment to see what works for you. Practice, practice, practice.
I'd recommend attending workshops rather than a college photography program although some community colleges have good programs that are not too costly. Time in college would be better spent studying business since that will better determine whether you can make a living doing portraits or become another starving artist.
