G. Mark’s Answer

I'll give you the practical advice that I think will help the most. A good school for engineering is one that you will work hard in. Any accredited university will do for that. You can also go to colleges to get an associate's degree. The idea is that a "good school" will likely be good to get a first job, but as your career progresses, you will be judged more and more by what you accomplish. If you get into MIT or Stanford or Berkeley or CMU, great. I've been impressed by those schools because of the interactions I've had with brilliant people there. But they generally are successful because of the work they've done, not by the name of the university. So relax. Get into any school and work hard.

The criteria for a "good school" are 1) You can go there, 2) You will study hard, and 3) You can afford it. After that, you'll choose what job or position or other project you get into, and choose one you like. Because you'll probably be good at what you like. And likely like what you're good at.

Make sense?

it depends on the specific kind of engineering program you are interested in, and also whether it is an undergraduate or graduate program, but generally, USNews publishes an annual ranking of the top schools in the country and that is a good starting point for your research. the latest rankings are available here. Good luck!

I'd like to suggest my Alma Mater, the University of Washington. Several of their engineering departments are in the Top 20 in the Country. The UW is a stunningly beautiful campus, located just 4 miles from incomparable Downtown Seattle!

Tom’s Answer

there are many good schools, it depends what type of engineering you want to study (civil, mechanical, electrical, computer, . . . .), how much tuition you'd like to pay, and where/location you would like the school to be located (type of weather). top engineering schools usually includes Stanford, MIT, Purdue, Missouri School of Science and Technology (I graduated there), Univ of California Berkeley.

Tom recommends the following next steps:

use Google. I used this criteria for engineering schools near Milwaukee since that is where you are from https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=engineering+colleges+near+milwaukee but you could modify it for any area of the country.
US News and World Report ranks all kinds of colleges. here is their link for best engineering undergraduate colleges --- https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/rankings/engineering
