Renee’s Answer

Hi Marisol,

After completing four years of medical school, the next requirement for becoming a surgeon is to complete a surgery residency program. In the U.S., general surgery residency programs take at least five years to complete. Surgical residency programs pay residents approximately $50,000 each year and provide slight salary increases year after year. The following website could be helpful to you: https://study.com/surgeon_education.html

Best of luck to you!

Is there a specific specialty you're interested in? Here is a good place to start to get an idea: https://www.facs.org/education/resources/medical-students/faq/training. All surgeons would attend medical school (4 years), plus a residency (number of years can vary), and some specialties highly encourage a fellowship (usually, 1 year) before their first year in practice alone as a surgeon.
