Charley’s Answer
I worked as an environmental engineer for almost 7 years, working for an environmental consulting firm. I worked with oil and gas companies as my primary clients. My time was split between time in the office and time in the field. When in the office, I spent time obtaining bids from contractors, scheduling jobs, evaluating correspondence from environmental agencies and writing reports for submission to environmental agencies. When in the field, I would be working at a job site overseeing contractors and collecting samples (soil, groundwater, etc.) for submission to labs. The location of the job sites varied - when I worked in the gulf coast area, I worked at current and former refinery sites, and when I worked on the west coast I worked at retail sites (gas stations). All sites were locations where there was contamination.

Most environmental engineers have a variety of tasks that they carry out each day. In a single day, an engineer working in a firm as a manager in different companies may manage several projects.
