Krystian’s Answer

As a pre-med student, volunteer hours are important. However, there are certain types of volunteer hours that stand out more than others. For instance is there a public health clinic that needs volunteers? For your major it will be important to show initiative in the work you do and volunteering in a medical related setting looks much better than say, cleaning up a beach(still important to keep our earth clean though). As a senior Id say having somewhere close to 150 hours is a great look!

Krystian recommends the following next steps:

look at your top schools and see if they have any suggestions on hours.
look up local volunteering ads (many websites offer this)
Have fun and embrace the experiences you gain.
Thank you comment icon Thank you so much, I will look more into volunteer opportunities that hold experience in the medical field! Gisselle

Preeya’s Answer

Hi Giselle! You should be trying to do community service before college but there is not a specific number of hours you must have to be a pre-med major! The number of hours that you complete becomes significantly more pertinent when you are applying to medical school, which is where Krystian's answer becomes applicable.
