Volunteer for projects that give you the opportunity to learn building skills such as habitat for humanity. Seek out volunteer opportunities and look for a part time job (depending on your age and if / when you can work) somewhere that can help familiarize you with the industry.

In most cases I would say go to a trade school. But for this you may be better served by working with carpenters. As was said you can learn a lot by doing Habitat projects. You can also learn by watching HGTV and DIY network. But the best way to learn carpentry may be to go work with experienced carpenters. You will probably have to start by being a low level laborer and moving boards and holding things while they do the work. But let them know you want to learn the trade, then watch and learn. Ask questions when you dont understand what they are doing. But understand that they are working and may not always be able to go into detail on things. But keep working and asking questions. If one person doesn't help much, or if you feel you have learned all you can from that person, move on to another. There are lots of opportunities out there in this trade!

Join groups that build up women in business. Network and advertise as a female owned business. Women tend to support other women so get the word out using social media and networking channels.

Provide outstanding customer service and keep a list of references with pictures of work you have done.

Good luck!!

Jason’s Answer

Go to Home Depot or Lowe’s and take part in their free seminars to learn the basics and tools needed for carpentry. If you are still interested try to find a carpenter to apprentice under.
