What are some ways I can get PCE hours for PA school without any certifications?

I am going into my third year of undergrad. I have my CPR certification and some experience being a Wellness Technician, however I do not have time while in school to take more classes to get more certifications. What types of jobs and internships should I be looking for in order to help me get my hours? #internship

At a minimum, you could consider home health aide or physical therapist aide, but these hours are not always accepted by PA programs. I do suggest looking into training as a phlebotomist or nurse aid, which takes about 6-10 weeks to complete the training. This would open up more doors for you in terms of where you can apply.

Kaitlin recommends the following next steps:

Look into community colleges and technical schools regarding certification
Talk with your top PA programs to see what they prefer in patient care hours

Hi Alyson,

You can look into being a medical scriber (popular), also look into being a Medical Assistant either at a hospital or clinic (CityMD, private practice, Urgent care, etc) for paid positions.

For unpaid but equally valuable, I'd say go to the volunteer offices in hospitals in your area and shadow with physicians, nurses, or PA's to help in the clinics.

Start building your professional network. Show up on time, be professional, build rapport with the staff, and you'll get an excellent recommendation. Some folks I know who were so good at their role, they were offered a paid position, a promotion, or given a steller recommendation.

Hope this helps and good luck!
