You can pursue your career in Marketing, Finance, Consulting etc. Otherwise if you have good chunk of money/ can get good sponsors and want to pursue your passion as your career, you can always start your own startup.

Brandon’s Answer

There isn't a specific job that I can recommend as best for general business, but it will give you a strong foundation to apply to almost any field.  When you are not quite sure, choosing your first real job is not a critical as choosing the field you want enter because switching industries can be very difficult without taking a big step backwards.  If you are not sure about a specific field, pick a specific company.  Many companies have positions you never even knew existed that could be perfect for your skill set. However, I would recommend switching if you do not find yourself excited about your new field after a year or two with the understanding that the more years you spend in one field at one company, the more valuable you become.

Business Administration is a good degree to have to go into various areas of business. Many folks have gotten this degree and then moved into an interested area of business that they learned about in college. Marketing, Advertising, Accounting, etc. What do you like math, sales, customer service? Find out what you love to do through business electives at college. Then work with your college advisors to chart a course a successful degree program.

Hi, Jordan! Another area you could look at is Project Management. It’s a great business focus that applies to all areas. Although people don’t realize it, we all use project management in our lives daily to accomplish various things. My undergrad degree was in theatre, then I got my MBA in business and focused on project management. That combo was incredible and gave me an edge in the business world. So, no matter what, get some liberal arts classes with your business focus.

Brian’s Answer

"General business" is a bit of a misnomer. If you're pursuing an undergraduate business degree, you'll have to decide whether you want a job in banking / finance, consulting, accounting, marketing, or another similar job function. Selecting which function you prefer most will help steer you towards jobs that align best with your career goals.

If you truly have no preference - consulting (and particularly management consulting) may provide the greatest diversity of options. It generally gives you exposure to a number of industries, and provides exit opportunities to companies within those industries once you specialize. However, for all of those options, you may have the opportunity to go back to business school and pivot if you so choose.

Regardless - don't feel like you're locked-in to a given career choice right out of college. If you fall in love with a career field that's outside of the one you choose, there's always a way to get there if you want it badly enough. Best of luck!
