I'm interested in working for a FBO at the local airport on nights and weekends. Can this create an opportunity for me to move into an entry level position with the main airport and eventually move my way up the ladder to an airport management position?

I've always had an interest in working for an airport, but I don't know exactly how to do that. This question was posted by a CareerVillage administrator on behalf of the students of CareerVillage. #aviation #airline-industry #fbo

Geoffrey,

I'm not sure where you are at in your career/education currently, but I can tell you that generally just working for an FBO or other business on an airport doesn't necessarily give you a "foot in the door" with the airport operator itself. However, those jobs can be valuable experience, especially if you have limited aviation knowledge or background. Depending upon the size and type of airport you want to work for, I highly recommend a degree in Aviation Management, Airport Management, or something similar. Many will require this, and even those that don't can have competitive hiring processes.

Personally, I worked for both a flight school and then an airline while putting myself through school and before starting my airport operations/management career. Many of my colleagues share similar paths. Internships in airport operations or airport management are also hugely beneficial as they not only give you experience to land an entry level job, but can help build your network which will help you in your job search.

That being said, every airport can be different in what they look for in an entry level position or what they consider entry level. Try reaching out to managers/directors at some of the airports near where you live, or find one you would like to work at some day and let them know you are interested in airport management as a career. Most will be happy to give you advice or share their stories with you.

It would never hurt to learn about the operation. That is hands on experience and that is very valuable. I have done that kind of work and I really enjoyed it. Being a pilot was great because I made connections. I was also able to travel with some of the customers to be able to fly the plane and get experience. Learn everything that you can and make connections. Also, the main part is get a degree in aviation management or some type of aviation degree. That is really the only way to get your dream job of running an airport
Good luck
Steve

Yes, I believe it is a good start and a way to learn about the industry. Of course a formal education is also appropriate. I, myself, started working on the ramp as my first job. I would trade that experience for anything.
