Do psychiatrists provide therapy or do they only prescribe drugs?
I was wondering if I should try and become a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist and wanted to know whether psychiatrists offer therapy as a clinical psychologist would? #psychiatry #clinical-psychologist

Dan did an excellent job answering this question. He's right on!! Psychiatrists are medical doctors and as such focus on the biological aspect of mental illness. Their focus is on medication and typically see patients about 1x monthly to follow up on medicine whereas psychologists focus on helping the patient develop better skills for functioning and dealing with their symptoms and issues
Dan’s Answer
I'm neither a psychologist nor a psychiatrist, BUT I have many friends who are psychologists, and I have been to a psychologist and I went with a friend to a psychiatrist, so I do have first-hand experience. In my experience, psychiatrists focus much more on talking with patients to figure out which drug is most appropriate for them. They do not provide conversational therapy the way a psychologist does. I hope that helps!

Psychiatrists-(A psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in psychiatry. A psychiatrist specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. Psychiatrists are medical doctors who must evaluate patients to determine whether or not their symptoms are the result of a physical illness, a combination of physical and mental, or a strictly psychiatric one. In order to do this, they may employ the psychiatric examination itself, a physical exam, brain imaging (computerized tomography or CT/CAT scan), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and positron emission tomography (PET) scanning), and blood laboratories. Psychiatrists prescribe medicine, and may also use psychotherapy, although the vast majority do medical management and refer to a psychologist or another specialized therapist for weekly to bi-monthly psychotherapy.
So to answer your question yes they provide therapy and Medication.
