Serah’s Answer

Hospitals need great information technology too! With the adoption of electronic health records and the data privacy regulations, there is plenty to do in order to keep patient data accessible and safe.

You could eventually become an IT Director. Here are some openings at a children's hospital:

List of types of hospital staff: https://www.kevinmd.com/blog/2013/12/people-work-hospital.html

Serah recommends the following next steps:

See if a hospital near you has a volunteer program. Ask them to show you around and tell you about the different types of volunteer roles in order to get exposure to the hospital operations.
Go on LinkedIn and search the Groups for Hospital IT Administration. Join a few and see what people are talking about.
Identify the top three Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems used in your country (Epic is one).

Kim’s Answer

Kyah,

I have seen entry-level postings in the Admitting Department. You have to talk to patients/families and get their demographics (name/address/etc) as well as insurance information, scan their ID, etc. and enter it into the computer.

Hospitals are interesting because there are soooo many different occupations within a hospital! Some may offer tuition assistance, if you have an interest in going to college or getting a technical certification (Xray, etc).

Hi Kyah, I would say that an IT intern in Healthcare segment it's a great way to understand the vast options you can have in that area of technology. From Network Engineer to Data Analyst, Java coder to application developer, SOC engineer to database administrator.

Mariana recommends the following next steps:

Find courses online about a subject you like (Coursera, Youtube)
Try to find an internship in a local hospital with good IT department, Mayo Clinic is one of the top investors in technology
