David’s Answer

All you need to do to get an apprentice license is print out form on the Construction Industries Board or CIB. Fill out form and send in appropriate fees

In order to obtain a Journeyman card you must work and be able to certify that work under a licensed Master Electrician for 8000 hours. Then you will need to take and pass the state exam. Pay the fee and if you pass they will send you a license.

This is the basics of obtaining a license. An apprentice card is very simple as there is no test. You are in learning mode and that is basically documentation towards your Journeyman card.

Hope this answers and helps!
Thank you comment icon Hi David, For clarification, I wanted to ask: Do you need any type of training to get an apprentice license? Gurpreet Lally, Admin
Thank you comment icon Prior training is not required in order to obtain an apprentice license. Of course you should be working the trade when you request the license. Always best if you can get into an apprentice program and get the proper training and ensure that your hours are well documented. David Abraham

In California, you need to get an apprentice card from DLSE (Department of Labor Standards) then accumulate 8000 hours of work experience with a licensed contractor. Once that is completed you can sign up to take your exam for a General Electrician Certification, If you pass you will receive your journeyman's card that has to be renewed every 3 years. That requires payment of the renewal fee to the state, along with the proof of 32 credits of continuous education from an accredited college or institution approved by the DLSE .

You need atleast 4 years of verifiable experience in the trade including residential and commercial experience that is signed by affidavit from a licensed contractor. You also need an accredited apprenticeship that's approved by your state board before being able to test for your journeyman exam

Rick’s Answer

To obtain an electricians license you must first participate in an approved apprenticeship program. This program is overseen by a licensed master electrician who tracks and monitors your progress. During this program you will have field related classes which must be satisfactorily passed. You'll also have to complete 8000hrs (or approx 4 yrs) of on the job training using the National Electric Code (NEC) as a standard. Once you've completed all required classwork and on the job training the master electrician can graduate you from the program and consider you eligible to take the state electrical journeyman exam which is based on the NEC. Upon receiving a satisfactory score on this exam your state will issue you an electrical license. There are fees and costs along the way unless your program covers them and once you've obtained your license there are periodic updates to the NEC which will require you to attend the required update course in order to renew your license.

Rick recommends the following next steps:

Find an approved apprenticeship program
Sign up and complete all required tasks and work
Graduate from program
Study for state exam
Take and pass state exam
