Hi Christian!

History of Fashion is another topic that contributes very well to students' understanding of another aspect of history! I have taught this to students and it is very fascinating how clothing can really reflect the cultural environment of a particular time period.

I very much agree with Mandy - history is a very rich topic and very complex due to factors relating to people being in power. Based on this, I would like to suggest that you research what subject areas you really have a passion for - is it fashion? American history? Asian Art? (The list is endless!) That way, you can really focus on that area and give your students some great sources. It is better to be an expert on one thing, rather than knowing a little bit of every subject in history.

You can also research what history classes are being offered in high school and colleges. You can get some hints from the course catalogs on what the classes focus on and see if these are something you want to explore in your class.

Emilia J. recommends the following next steps:

Research what subject areas really interest you, and look into the history behind it.
Research what types of history classes are on offer at other high school and colleges.

Mandy’s Answer

History is SUCH a rich topic, and there are so many his (and hers) stories to tell!

My most favorite course in college (I majored in political science and English) were called "History American Popular Music", and "Our History through FairyTales"

Both of these were SO COOL to me. I love pop music, and being able to go back into history to study how America's music is a way of showing the different major political events, and how our music helped shape the cultures of many other countries (and how our music was stolen and repurposed to sell to a different audience), was really fascinating.

Thinking about fairytales and how they were originally told as horror stories in in the 1700's, and how they've been reshaped by disney, animation, etc. shows how these once verbally told stories have transformed and evolved throughout history.

ALSO! It is SO very important to remember that much of our history was written by those in power and controlled the discourse. Our ability to study history through different lenses and access other sources and documents can help reshape what we think of our history, and debunk a lot of things we were taught in our time in school.

For example, American History taught in most high schools is all about white people, how slavery was a good thing, and how we have a manifest destiny to gain control over the entire land. Underneath that are so many other untold stories that must be shared. Its important for students to have balance on everyone's history.

You have such an amazing opportunity as a history teacher to give your students a different way of looking at and interpreting history, all while being able to prepare them for those all too important AP tests.

Would be happy to connect more, I'm a huge history nerd. Hit me up on linkedin!
