It depends on the mission of the research, that dictate where your research is going, which is a disadvantage in industry. In academia, you may be able to choose what you prefer to study. In industry, your choices are limited by the company you are joining. As your are in Redwood city, there are many genetics-oriented companies in your area for you to pick your interest.
