Renee’s Answer

No, they have other duties. They're first responders as well so you'll see them go out for accidents or anything requiring emergency assistance.

Eric’s Answer

No, they have many other duties. Fires is only a small part of the job, and it is actually decreasing in some areas., especially with the technology now available, such as fire alarms, carbon monoxide alarms and public education, as well as better building construction. Most fire departments get a majority of their calls from the EMS side. For some departments, it can be as much as 80% of their calls are EMS oriented. This is one reason why almost all firefighters are either EMT's or paramedics. Training is another aspect of the job that is ongoing. They also do domestic duties, such as cleaning the fire house, vacuuming, trash removal, washing the trucks, and some departments have kitchens where they can prepare meals and eat together..

Eric recommends the following next steps:

Stop at your local fire department and talk to the firefighters. Excellent source of information.
