Herbert’s Answer

First, I would commit to obtaining an OHSA 30(at least an OHSA 10) certification to become aware of the dangers and overall expectations of a heavy equipment operator. There is so much more to the career itself than strictly operating equipment. I absolutely love my career and it is witnessed in my level of performance, from the smallest tasks to the greatest. If you lack love for what you do to earn your income it will show.

Chris’s Answer

Depending on your age a summer job with a local street or parks department will allow you to be around and operate different types of equipment . It will give you good experience and you'll be paid while you learn.

Look for an IUOE local in your area. Apply for being an apprentice and get paid while you train.
