Marie’s Answer

Great question, Marleen!
A great way to start would be to look into local outpatient clinics or hospitals near you and introduce yourself to the director, ask if you could volunteer or potentially work in the clinic or agency or facility as an aide and see if the field interests you. Having the job described to you is like someone telling you about a book or a movie without you seeing it for yourself, you would miss so much of what the field and experience is all about! There are many paths a PT could take, not limited to Acute Care ( hospital) Rehab facility ( Inpatient meaning they temporarily live there) daily clinics, homecare, school settings, fitness gyms, private agencies and corporations with their own business clinics! A new field is developing called Canine Physiotherapy, where PTs and Vets/ techs apply therapy to animals! The field is very diverse, the fun part is finding your interests! Good luck!!!

Marie recommends the following next steps:

Do a search online for local PT clinics
Search online “Animal Physical Therapy”
Search online APTA career paths

Misti’s Answer

Hello Marleen,

My daughter is considering a career in Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy. She was just accepted into TWU in Denton, TX. I would recommend searching their website (www.twu.edu) for Pre-Physical Therapy Bachelor's degree programs. Also, you may locate a professor through their website who may provide additional guidance . The Physical Therapy program requires a Masters and Doctorate degree. You may also locate a Physical Therapist in your area to interview and mentor with. They may recommend volunteer opportunities or entry level positions that would expose you to the field. Networking is very important in entering any career field.

Best of luck to you!
