Chermone’s Answer

I agree with Michael's answer. Enlisted and Officer contracts bring in different pay, but the Officer route will provide greater financial stability. I would also add that being in the military won't make you rich. It will provide you with a decent salary and there are some perks along the way. However, proper financial management is key. If you go in the military with tons of debt, it's not going to be a quick or easy fix. If you want to be rich, look into civilian career fields that pay well getting out of college and do that. Good luck!

Brooklyn’s Answer

Hello Jean!
If you’re looking for money in the military, the officer route is definitely the way to go. But most military jobs are based solely on the rank you have; and depending on what job you have, it can be harder to promote in rank. For example, I am a navy corpsman. Our pickup quota was 2%, which means, if there are 5,000 military at the same rank taking the tests, then only 100 people in the whole navy for that job, picked up rank. The best bet would be to come into the military, use free education to get a bachelors in whatever you are passionate about (Health Administration is a good option), and then get a GS position as a civilian. Best of luck!

Mike’s Answer

Hi Jean,

Prior to entering the military, having a degree (Bachelor's and higher) already will provide an additional avenue for you to pursue. Basically, in addition to enlisted, you can also pursue becoming an officer (usually a higher salary scale than enlisted).

Also, as you put more time in the military, your pay also goes up – whether it's due to advancement or simply due to "Time in Service" (how long you've been in the military). Certain (less than desirable duty stations also offer extra pay/allowance).
