Nija’s Answer

Hi Roberto,

This is a great question that you are asking. Actually, I am not in the HVAC field but my husband's background is in HVAC. My husband has been in the HVAC field for almost 13 years. When my husband worked at a children's hospital as a maintenance worker; he discovered his passion to further pursue his career in the HVAC field. He decided to get his Associate's degree and he continued to persevere in order to advance himself. He obtained the universal HVAC license and other related licenses. My husband has been working at two different colleges for 10 years and he is currently working towards being an engineer. He works with the boiler systems and he enjoys it alot. Therefore, you have the opportunity to pursue the HVAC field if this is what you want to do. Follow your dreams and don't let nothing stop you. You can decide whether you want to work with heating, ventilation or air-conditioning systems. You have different options to choose from and there are so many job opportunities. I encourage you to think about obtaining a degree in HVAC and work on getting the necessary licenses needed to work in the field. Also, get job training as well in order for you to establish experience and growth.

Nija recommends the following next steps:

Network with people who are in the HVAC field.
Research for more information about the field.
Think about going to college to major in the HVAC field.
Obtain job training and learn from others.

Valerie’s Answer

I was a CTE teacher many moons ago in New York City and had students who were interested in HVAC. The guidance counselor advised them to enroll in trade school such as Lincoln Tech or Apex Technical School. Upon graduation, students were able to secure high paying union jobs. If possible, enroll in a high school with a strong vocational bent as opposed to one with a focus on academics. At a vocational high school the teachers often have contacts in the field which can help you to land internships , externships or jobs.
