The herb fennel is a larval host plant for the black swallowtail butterfly. This means the butterfly lays eggs on this plant. The caterpillars hatch and munch away on the plant. While this might make the plant unsightly by some standards, the caterpillars do not kill the plant.
I am a caterpillar then. Fennel is so good!
