Anita’s Answer

Hi Karla!

My typical day treating patients can only be described as organized chaos! I work in a busy clinic where I see lots of patients each day. Your experience will depend on the type of setting you work in. I work in the outpatient setting, where patients are generally healthy and come in by appointment to address an injury, pain or dysfunction.

I get in a bit early to review the patients on my schedule and prepare for the day. Part of each patient's session typically involves hands on work, where I mobilize and soothe injured areas of the body. The session also involves performing exercises that the patient is to be doing at home as well as adding new exercises as they are getting better. Progress toward healing is made as we change and grow the patient's treatment plan.

I work alongside a physical therapy aide, who will help make sure the patients are doing their exercises correctly and to give them ice or heat as needed if they are having pain. During the day, I am also multitasking to make sure I write a digital note for each patient's session that is submitted to their insurance. Making sure this gets done correctly is very important.

It can be stressful, but is so much fun to work with people. Each day you must be quick on your feet, able to multitask and there for your patient and the aide you are working with. The reward comes in seeing your patients get better and improving the quality of his or her life. It is an added bonus to help your aide learn as well as any students that may be working in the clinic. It is truly a team environment.

Hope this helps!

Sheila’s Answer

Hello Karla,
My typical day as a home health Physical Therapist, includes waking up at least 15 minutes before our huddle call at 8 am to call and confirm patients for the day, and report to our clinical manager during the huddle call. I see between 5-8 patients per day, which is doable since our company provides security person who drives us also in between patients. Regular visits include assessment and treatment while also trying to document on EHR. It's unsual to finish a document while treating patients so usually I come home with notes to finish at night. The one thing I like about home health is the flexibility, and the reward to see patients get better in their functions in their homes.
