Being a Jewelry designer can be done without a formal education. But it is similar to all artistic endevors - some will become famous and some may not. Networking in the industry is key. If you design your own I would suggest getting courses in gemology. Learn from the inside, get a job working at a local jewelry store so you can learn on the job about what is popular. Research what was popular, what is popular and how it revolves from season to season and year to year. Learn about antiques, metals, gems, and other materials popular in jewelry making (both old and new) jewelry is huge in the auction world, knowing about what was popular can help you design a timeless piece. If you aren't interested in designing and just owning - I would suggest focusing on a franchise that is well known, or branch out to be a standalone - if you choose to be a standalone it is all about branding so I would reach out to popular designers who are current in the industry.

Hi,
What does 'good' mean?
Close to home?
Friendly boss and staff?
Working with wood?
Working with silver?
Makes 100K a year?
It depends, do you want to be a business owner? or create art?
Everything that is not copyrighted you can copy. See what is working / successful in another state and do something similar / same.
Make a business that you push down hill (easy) not a business that you have to push uphill (hardwork)

If you get into the hand made market, you can find a niche. You can also start working at a local jewelry store, learn the ropes, how they get their inventory, what their buyers look for, etc and work towards opening your own shop.
