Hi Cynthia,
There are several different agencies that need correctional officers such as state, local and federal agencies. I would recommend that you start by contacting your local Sheriff's Office. Typically, the Sheriff's Office is the agency that runs the local jail and they hire their own correctional officers. The hiring process would require a criminal history background check and interviews with a panel of hiring personnel. If you are hired as a correctional officer, you are required to attend a correctional officer training academy. You will learn everything you need to know about how to be a correctional officer and protect not only the inmates but yourself and your co-workers as well. You will have to become comfortable being in the presence of inmates.
