How can I obtain training or experience working with animals?

I am going to school for Zoology to become a Zookeeper at the Oregon Zoo. I have been told that obtaining any relevant work with handling animals would look good on my resume. Especially while I am attending school, but I have a full-time job and am going to school full time. How would I be able to find a job in the animal field that could benefit me and help me gain the experience that I need? I would need to work full time. I am kind of stuck in a field that has NO animal related training at all. I have applied to shelters, tried volunteering, but it is hard with full time school and work. #animals #degree #job #Zoology #Wildlife

If you could get a job as an educator at a zoo, that would be very beneficial. Educator positions don’t typically require hands-on animal experience as a prerequisite, but it will give you experience working around, and sometimes directly with, education animal ambassadors. And it will also give you exposure to people at the zoo who make hiring decisions. I know a lot of people that have gone from educator to zookeeper.

I agree with Paul 100%. You have to make the time and take the time to do it. Think of it as an investment.

Paul’s Answer

It's tough but you would have to MAKE time on the weekends to volunteer at animal shelters and emergency animal hospitals. Even if you just did 1-2 hours every weekend it would be better than nothing.
