Omar,

"customer service" is a catch-all job title used to describe many different sorts of jobs. Therefore, the pay ranges from minimum wage to pretty decent. Let me give you some examples of positions that might be called "customer service"

  1. working at a car wash
  2. retail clerk/cashier/fast food
  3. call center - lots of variety here - some pay very low, some are awesome!

a. internet/cell phone providers

b. insurance policy service - health, car, homeowners, etc.

4 Customer service for a BIG company, handling orders from other companies. As an example, a company that manufactures heavy equipment has sold a backhoe to another company. They need a new attachment, replacement hose, etc. Or a company that manufactures and sells medical equipment - robotic surgery arms, mri's etc.

As you can see, customer service is everywhere! It is a great skill to acquire, however you can get it - even if waiting tables, etc. You can use it other places. The key to providing excellent customer service is to treat others the way you would want your grandmother to be treated, don't take it personally when customers are rude and obnoxious, and learn to resolve complaints in a manner that will make the customer want to come back (or at least not badmouth the company on social media).

Hope this helps!

Kim

Thank you comment icon Speaking from a call center experience, the starting salary is usually hourly, and depends upon the market area you are working in. A base wage would be typically a little higher than minimum wage, skill set required is computer or typing skills, able to multi-task, customer facing experience (retail/service industry/sales). The opportunity to move up in the company is dependent upon your drive to achieve to the next level. This is enhanced by education, volunteering for opportunities to expand your job knowledge within the organization, then applying for job opportunities that will increase not only your salary, but also your job experiences. It's not uncommon for a customer service representative to achieve to the level of VP, as you add value to your brand and the company. Stacy Chirichigno

Customer service positions can range from an entry level salary all the way up to $50-60k in some cases. Starting out, you need to be passionate about working with people, energetic and have good communication skills. I work at Verizon and we have tons of people who are customer service reps that launch themselves into a very successful career.
