Le Chern’s Answer
I have a friends who are doctors or in training and here is what I know. At minimum, its a long training requirement
- 4 years to get a bachelors degree
- 4 years medical school
- 3-7 years in residency depending on specialty
It takes even longer if you choose to specialize in surgery.
I would go ahead and speak to pre-med counselors in colleges, who could best advise you on this.

Hi Kamylie!
Le Chern's breakdown was very accurate. Most people are between 28 and 34 when they complete the entire process of becoming a specialized physician. Also, it is becoming more common for students to take a gap year or two between their undergraduate studies and medical school, so this also adds on to the time it takes.
