Karlo’s Answer

Being a rehabilitation technician has a variety of benefits, particularly if your goal is to become a therapist. The greatest benefit is technicians' exposure to the daily realities of physical and occupational therapists. Technicians take part in the privilege of guiding a patient through their rehabilitation, likely participating in the unique bond that can form between therapeutic providers and patients. On the other hand, technicians also get an unadulterated view of the challenges specific to these professions.

The practice setting can also change the benefit of working as a technician. For example: technicians in inpatient settings may end up interacting with a wider variety of medical professionals, or technicians working in outpatient private practice may directly help with therapeutic exercises or modalities.

In all, having an intimate view and understanding of rehabilitation is the best part of being a technician.

Anita’s Answer

As a physical therapist, I work very closely with rehab techs in my field. Most of the techs are in the midst of earning a college degree or have completed a college degree and are working to get into physical therapy school while working. We do have a few rehab techs who work at the clinic as their full-time job.

The benefit for our students is that they are really discovering what the day-to-day of being a therapist is all about before they start school. They are also able to put their undergraduate school work to use in instructing patients on rehab exercises. They are also learning how to be a great professional and communicator. I believe the best part of the job, though, is the reward of being apart of a team that improves people's lives. Patients are very appreciative and that is extremely gratifying.

Hope this helps!
