I have worked in the industry (infosec) for 6-7 years. I've met a lot of security analysts and they seem very happy. It is a job that is in super high demand, so you'll never have a hard time finding work. It pays well. The key thing that connects the analysts I know is a real passion for technology. They all love learning how things work and how to break them. I would add that there are lot of good resources online to begin learning how to do analyst work.

Thank you comment icon thank you so much. it is good to know that it won't be hard to find work. one more thing. whats your favorite part about your job ? justin

Hi Justin!

I've been working in Information Security for over 10 years. The job is challenging but it has a lot of rewards as well. As an analyst, you'll be in responsable for what is needed to make an organization secure. If you take analyst as a stepping stone, you can then pivot to other more specialized areas of InfoSec like AppSec, DNR, Compliance, etc. People with those skills are in high demand all over the world and specially in the US.

Cheers!

Matias recommends the following next steps:

I would recommend reading and testing the bug bounty programs (www.bugcrowd.com) to get into the InfoSec world (and also make some money :))

Josh’s Answer

Information Security Analyst would be great job or career option. I've been in the IT security industry for 9 years and the software industry for 20 years. The need for IT security talent continues to grow and the job market in the security space will continue to grow and evolve rapidly. The US Dept of Labor Statistics published the following: "Employment of information security analysts is projected to grow 28 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations. Demand for information security analysts is expected to be very high, as these analysts will be needed to create innovative solutions to prevent hackers from stealing critical information or causing problems for computer networks." (https://www.bls.gov/ooh/computer-and-information-technology/information-security-analysts.htm )

It's also worth noting that many advanced IT security professionals started as analysts, and then moved in to more senior roles or leadership positions, so it is great starting point for your career.

I'd encourage you to research companies that are in the IT security space to learn more about areas they are focusing on and what aspects of IT security are growing or are in high demand, so that you can spend your time and energy pursuing skills that will be in demand for the foreseeable future. Once you have a sense of what you want to focus on, you can pursue the right level of education and industry certifications to get the job you'd like. Good luck!

Josh recommends the following next steps:

Research companies in the security space (not just to work for, but what technologies are hot and will be around for the foreseeable future)
Determine what areas of IT security are of interest to you
Get the right level of education and industry certifications
