Lucien’s Answer

Having a Phd in computer science will open up many doors for you in pretty much any industry. Many STEM subject graduates are sought after by employers due to the exceptional Analytical, Quantitative, Research and writing skills they tend to exhibit.

A Phd in a subject such as computer science will reinforce this for many employers. However what is your Phd research going to be on in that field of study, and are you looking for a career within academia or elsewhere?

Many graduates of computer science tend to gravitate to large consultancy firms as well as investment banks due to their strong skillset that proves to be very useful in those industries.

Dinesh’s Answer

Hi There,

Mostly teaching opportunities at engineering colleges. If the institute from where you did your Ph.D from is a top ranking one, you can also apply for positions of Assistant Professor or equivalents.

You may also apply to the R&D divisions of IT firms. Again, this depends on the Institute from where you did your Ph.D, and the area of your research. You can definitely apply to the research labs of services firms like TCS or accenture. If your institute is a top-ranked one, and your thesis is on a “hot topic” like AI or image processing, you can also attempt to join Amazon, Google or Microsoft.

Dinesh recommends the following next steps:

Apply for R&D on top IT organization

Mathew’s Answer

Assuming your proposed Ph.D. focus is some aspect of wireless networks as noted, the primary option could be to look for jobs with wireless equipment manufacturers. There is lot of applied research needed to design, implement and maintain the new generation of wireless (5G) which is being deployed world-wide. Many universities have research programs focused on wireless technologies and these groups may be another place where you might apply for jobs. Once you graduate, you will have a very strong background in Analytical methods, processes and Mathematics, and that along with your Ph.D. should allow you to be a strong candidate for R&D jobs which may not be directly related to wireless.

Good luck and best regards

Anthony’s Answer

Typically these degrees are found at software and other high tech firms but not in the general industry as much (e.g. finance), which can be a very good thing depending on your interests. Jobs within the tech industry this degree would support are usually going to be writing code or QA testing to begin with but after a few years you could be doing software architecture, managing teams, etc. If you like research and creative pursuits, a PhD would also be a prereq for becoming a college professor so it's good for academia.
