Andrea’s Answer

I decided to work in Human Resources because I liked working with people, helping solve problems, helping businesses to achieve great things with and because of their people, to help create environments where everyone can thrive, and to make a difference in people's lives. Plus - working with humans is NEVER boring!!!

Jenny’s Answer

I fell into my career in HR. When I was in college, I didn't know what line of work I wanted to go into; a lot of college students don't know, and that's ok! I attended career fairs to see what was our there and saved all of the business cards I collected. When I graduated from college, I spent a short time at a bank and realized it wasn't for me. So I went back to my stack of business cards and applied to all companies that I found interesting that were hiring for jobs for new grads. I happened to get hired in HR and enjoyed it, so 12 years later, here I am! A lot of people fall into their career in this way--by trial and error.

I like HR because, simply, I like helping people! I like being the warm, welcoming face at a company whom everyone knows. =)

Josephine’s Answer

Jennifer - I decided on this line of work while taking business classes in college.  When I graduated I took an entry level administrative role with a Company I knew I wanted to work for and the first opportunity that presented itself to get into the HR Department I jumped on it!  I have held positions in Training/Talent Development Organization, Staffing, Personnel Records Management and I am currently an HR Business Partner supporting a client organization of 5,000 people.  I am responsible for strategic support to the organization which means me work on organization structure, talent development, compensation administration, personnel issues and much more.

The HR field can be difficult because you are not always saying "yes" to things the client wants because it may not be in the best interest of the larger company.  I love this field and have working in it for 25+ years.  Good luck on making a decision about your career.

Josephine recommends the following next steps:

Review course work in Human Resources/Organization Design
Talk with a guidance counselor to get more information

Terry’s Answer

Hi Jennifer!

I realized that I wanted to work in HR, specifically Recruiting .. a couple of years into my Customer Service Role with Alaska Airlines.
I had been working for them for about 6 years at LAX and I was able to travel the world (for free)! There came a point in time when I had to decide on a major when I transferred from my community college over to Cal Poly Pomona. I thought about the Recruiter who interviewed me, when I as 19 and believed that I would impact the organization for the better. She saw something in me and my limited customer service experience at the time and gave me a chance to shine. I wanted to her, the one who recruited talent into the organization that I love and was proud to work for! After I received my degree, I was able to hold a corporate role with Alaska and United Airlines. My experience in customer service coupled with what I learned in college, helped give me the tools to recruit for various capacities in the airline industry! I am eternally thankful for that recruiter that gave me my start!

Richard’s Answer

I chose to become a physician because I have many family members who are physicians and it looked like a field in which I find job satisfaction. However, I did not truly become passionate about the field of medicine until my third year of medical school during clinical rotations. That was the first time I saw an image guided procedure. I was fascinated by the intersection between medical imaging and treatment. I decided that I wanted to become an interventional radiologist. Now I get to perform image guided procedures every day including angiograms, TIPS, radioembolization of tumors with Y-90, and thermal ablation of tumors.
