Robert’s Answer

Some parents will demand antibiotics for febrile illness even though the condition is clearly viral. You'll need a response in mind for unreasonable requests like this. Some parents will "doctor shop" to find some one who gives them what they want; do not feel guilty, the responsibility is on them now. HOWEVER any disagreement with a client may end up in a malpractice suit so be sure to document carefully the history physical and impression along with a brief explanation of your reasoning process in the medical record. A clear path to decision making will always be your best defense in any malpractice encounter.

Estelle’s Answer

I'm not a pediatrician, but I have good friends for a pediatrician. I think the hardest part of being a pediatrician is dealing with very sick children that you care for. I also think that the parents can be very difficult especially when you know what's best for the child. Pediatric can be a very fulfilling career and I wish you the best.
