Misty’s Answer

Hi Mariah.

I think the thing that led me to the medical field most is being able to make a difference. I worked with elderly, Alzheimers, and end of life patients and sometimes, there is not always a caring person in their lives and if I can be that person for them, then that is what I was put in their life to be. I find it very rewarding to care for those who are not able to care for themselves as they once did. I also feel that if I can be that one smiling face and kind word then I am serving my purpose as this is not always the case as sometimes there is care giver fatigue or the person does not have a caregiver so I can fill that role. I would not trade my time in geriatrics for anything in the world.

Richard’s Answer

I went to medical school because many of my family members are physicians and that seemed like a career that I would find challenging and interesting. I didn't actually become passionate about it until 3rd year of medical school when I saw my first image-guided procedure. That is when I chose the field of interventional radiology. Doing image guide procedures such as angiography, TIPS, tumor ablation, and y-90 radioembolization is a rewarding and fascinating career.

Yasemin’s Answer

Hi Mariah! What made me interested was when my grandmother was diagnosed with dementia, which then progressed to Alzheimer's. I took care of her for a while and I also explored the academic side of what she was experiencing, how her brain was changing in this debilitating disease. After that I really liked science and my biology teacher inspired me more by connecting real life medicine with science we would learn in the classroom; for example, how bone marrow transplants work in a cancer patient. I also always liked to help people, in the ER I am a volunteer who works with patients. I think it's very rewarding to be able to help someone out and be part of their life even for a moment as they are facing a health struggle. It is a long and arduous road but if you have the passion for science, healthcare and being able to make a difference for someone it's definitely worthwhile! If you want to know if it's right for you try to get some work in with patients and take a couple classes in science if you are in college, you want to be able to definitely explore to decide if it's a fit for you!

Best of luck!
