Hi Allisa,
A degree in Biology, or a more specific degree such as Zoology depending on what is offered at your university would be ideal. Many veterinary schools also require specific courses to be taken in college, such as Parasitology or Animal Behavior.
Many veterinary schools have preferrential admission for students who live in state, so I would recommend that you look at the requirements for veterinary schools in CA, such as UC Davis (https://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/admissions/criteria-admission) and UC San Diego (https://career.ucsd.edu/plan/explore/pre-health-med/veterinary-medicine/prepare.html).
One of the most important things will be experience - I'd highly recommend reaching out to a local veterinary clinic and asking to volunteer for them. You can work alongside the veterinary technicians and gain valuable experience, in addition to deciding if it is the right career for you. Many veterinary schools will require a certain amount of volunteer experience.
