Kathryn’s Answer

It's important to network inside AND outside your existing company AND industry. As an example, I lead sales training for an insurance company. So it's helpful for me to ensure my network includes people within my company who are outside of my function and business unit but its also important for me to network outside my company with learning leaders of other insurance companies as well as outside my industry. I've been fortunate enough to tour the learning facility for the US Navy, Jet Blue as well as Farmers Insurance and you'd be surprised how many commonalities we can find even though we are in different businesses! Hope this was helpful.

Kathryn recommends the following next steps:

Identify who you can contact inside and outside your organization.
When you reach out, find ways to offer your assistance. Those who give often receive even more!

Deepak’s Answer

Dear Noah,

Good question. There are many good, intelligent, professionals out there.

You should know whom to follow first - Read the blogs you are interested & aligning to your career path. Identify the authors from those blog's and now follow them either in that portal or via LinkedIn.

Subscribe - Subscribe to organizations or hashtags you are interested in. Read the posts by persons tagged to your interest and if it excites you follow them and add them to your network with their permission. Reach out to them in chat and discuss your goals.

Interactions - Ask them for their time and get into a discussion regarding to your career aspirations.

Hope this helps. Don't hesitate to reach out to me for any information.

Thanks,
Deepak

Leigh’s Answer

I would add to not only network with leaders and mentors within your organization or industry so that they can help guide you but also network with your peers and those whom you support. Networking with those you support can provide valuable insight on what is needed to improve your skill set and ways to improve your business practices. When you help make necessary changes to improve business efficiency and impact results you will most likely jumpstart your career!
