I would say my biggest challenge is the emotional battle I sometimes face after a loss or hard shift. I am a very emotional person so it hits me hard when I leave work, and sometimes even longer. It's important to try and switch off and leave work at work, but if you struggle to do that like me, then finding ways to implement self care often is needed. The good outweighs the bad though. I wouldn't change my job :)

Because of the shortage of staff, a new graduate can be on duty alone without an experienced midwife to consults in case they are stuck. This increases their stress level but eventually they get used to it and they provide the care based on knowledge and skills gained from classroom.

I would say the biggest challenge is that few understand our role. The public often confuses me with a doula or think that I come to your home. Some physicians and nurses aren’t even sure what we do!
The other major challenge is being in a supervisory or collaborative agreement that sometimes means loss of autonomy. I love what we do, but we don’t always get full say. Don’t get me wrong- I am happy for our physician colleagues to take over when it’s a high risk women!
