Napoleon’s Answer

Hi Onjee,

Firstly,I would like to know what aspect of director you want to be.Art gallery? School? Or public organisation?

I used to work in art gallery beforehand I think the basic thing you need to know is SOCIAL SKILL.Because it must involve with different artists, and art organizations to negotiate and collaborate, and need to build up and maintain the relationship with some art collector.

For example, go out to exhibitors, it needs to calculate and analyze the cost and benefits, so you need to know about the expenses of the event, and different kind of shipping fee, printing fee, and even insurance fee.

therefore, if you get a broad interpersonal network, it will have a positive impact for event planing in the future.

For staffing, there must be an art administrator to assist you in handling clerical work(such as different kind of contracts).Designers to assist you to design posters, and invitation letters, etc.If you have limited resources, you need to ensure your staff to have enough social skill to assist you with external work, so you need to consider this part when recruiting.

Hope it can help you.

Maya’s Answer

Hi Onjee!

I'm not sure how old you are (high school or college), but I think a good place to start would be taking some Art History courses offered at your high school or college. I majored in Art History for my undergrad and for a long time had a passion of being a curator and owning my own gallery. I currently do not work within a field that uses my degree in day to day, but I do not regret the time I spent in those courses and majoring in that topic because I learned so much about different types of art and enjoyed going to class because of it. Taking a few courses can really help you decide what type of art director you'd like to be if there's a certain style or time period of art you enjoy and want to focus on , etc.

Maya recommends the following next steps:

I would suggest reaching out to some local galleries in your area and interviewing the owners or curators to see how they got into their professions and seeing if you can volunteer, or if they have any internship opportunities where you could shadow a professional working as an art director to see what the day to day tasks are, and what their backgrounds are that brought them there. Good luck!
