Kay’s Answer

Hello. I've only worked with construction trades, not in them, so this will be a fairly general answer.

To work in carpentry, skills required include: reading and following prints, math skills, problem solving, physical dexterity and fitness, and like many jobs, the ability to work well with others.

Carpentry can be highly varied - new construction vs. old/remodeling, industrial vs. home, inside vs. outside work and probably more.

It can be very rewarding - both the aspects of getting things done and seeing something from nothing, but also in providing aesthetic solutions.

Daniel’s Answer

One of the best ways to learn Carpentry is hands on experience. I have a close friend who spent about 9 months learning carpentry from professionals, and the things you learn on the job with the right coaching is far superior to what you can learn in classes, training or by reading books. If there is someone you know with a carpentry business, asking for an apprenticeship or internship or even to volunteer once a week could get you a lot of experience in the industry.
