Hi David. I grew up a builders son so I helped build houses from the time I was 12 until after I graduated from college. I think your question is an excellent one! Although I am not currently working as a carpenter, I use a number of skills I learned as a carpenter every day:
1) Deadlines: Customers expect you to make and keep commitments. It doesn't matter that the framer took too long so now the plumber, electrician, sheetrocker, etc... are now all delayed. You have to find ways to move the project forward.
2) Attention to detail: In building, customers usually want to be highly involved in the process. This is personal for them and they are paying really close attention to the quality of work.
3) Customer service: When timelines slip or other problems arise, how you manage the customer relationship matters as much as how you solve the problem.
4) Hard skills: Even though I am not a builder, I have the skills to finish my own basement, build a deck, tile my floor, etc.. These things have saved me a fortune!

Even though, I don't have practical experience in carpentry it is one of the professions that provides a lot of opportunities. My experience in teaching Basic Design and Technology and creative art at the basic schools in Ghana offered me insightful opportunities that can be tap into in this particular field.
The world is advancing so quickly at a faster rate that anyone with a creative design mindset can land for himself/herself several golden opportunities. Ranging modern from interior and exterior decoration.
All one needs to do is to get some creative art lesson, or form a joint venture with someone whose gift is to sketch modern design on paper and then make it real in the woodwork that meet the modern carpentry work. I am currently looking for a carpenter who can use his carpentry skills to bring my sketches to being. Today's carpenter should be enlightened about the modern trend of their work and must not run away from sketches that are relevant to modern carpentry lifestyle. The foundation to a good carpentry world is insightful sketches.
Some samples of my artwork will be uploaded to this site God willing next week.
